What is the difference between an audio engineer and a producer? Are both of these services included in my rate?

This is one of the most common questions we get asked at Third Coast and it’s important to distinguish between these two processes, so we’ll go into some detail here. If you hire me as an audio engineer, my goal will be to document your performance at the highest possible fidelity and facilitate your vision for your song or project. My opinion of your song is not important to this process. Of course, I’m happy to offer feedback on performance or tone when asked but won’t take an active role in steering the aesthetic of your project unless you’ve brought me on board to work as a producer. This brings us to establishing my role as a producer.

Production can and has come to define a number of different processes and workflows in audio. A producer can simply provide and create instrumentals or beats. I often work for clients in this capacity and love producing custom instrumentals that move, inspire and elevate our clients’ performances and creative output. A producer can also offer opinions on pre-written material, arrangements, tempo and performance. I have a genuine appreciation for this part of the creative process and have personally seen records benefit tremendously from producer involvement there. Production informs tone and aesthetic choices that develop the sound of your recording and ultimately, the listening experience. If you are interested in hiring me as producer on your next song or project, please contact me directly to set up a pre-production consultation where we can both get a better idea of what you’re interested in and determine whether or not I’m the best fit for your project. Rates for production varies depending on my involvement and overall scope of the project. We like to keep it casual and host pre-production meetings over coffee or lunch, but are also happy to meet in house at Third Coast Recording Co.
